The study of wood as a renewable material and organic material is what is known as wood science. The processes and the tools used to utilize the material is what is known as wood technology. To be able to study wood it has to be compared to other products. The wood is checked against the other materials properties, performances, value, and work-ability. The utilization of technology gives wood an upper hand in most of this comparison. Some of these advantages include wood being a versatile material that can be used in a wide range of products. Once a tree has been cut down another can be planted in the same spot. The other merit is that a part of the harvested material is at the same time used as energy to produce the product.
Protection of wooden structure and products is a must if you want to keep the good looks in place. This protection is from moisture and insects which are the biggest threat to wood. The water particles in the timber increase the rotting and the insects bore through the wood. Many methods are available in the treatment of wood one of the most common being the ACQ – alkaline copper Quaternary. This is a copper-based preservative that is applied to the wood for protection. As effective as this preservative, it has some downside to its use. It has been seen corroding most metals for example aluminum in less than six months of its application. The saturation level of any treatment will depend on where the wood is going to be used and the species of the wood. The concentration level of the chemical will be different for two pieces of wood where one is used above ground and the other close to a water body.
Another wood treating method that is fast being accepted is the use of copper metal. This method, unlike the ACQ, is friendly to the metal fasteners and its gaining popularity very fast. An alternative name to be given to this method is the micronized copper wood preservative method. In this process microscopic particles of solid copper metal are mixed in a liquid carrier and injected to the wood at high pressure. The difference between this method and the other copper-based methods is that the copper is used as a metal rather than a dissolved material. This process is highly effective and the wood properties and heightened. The time the wood products treated using this method last is longer other types of treatment.
The micronized copper preservative has proven to be highly effective in protecting the wood against fungal decay and termites. It is not corrosive to metals used in together with the product. The wood treated using this method last longer and is stronger.
